Who Has the Best Tasting Water in Wyoming?
(Casper, WY) March 30, 2004 - It has been determined the Town of Afton has the best tasting water in
Wyoming. A panel if six judges scrutinized 22 entries and declared Afton the winner. The determination
was made by evaluating the bouquet, the clarity and the taste of each entrant.
The winner was chosen during The Best Tasting Water in Wyoming contest held during the 14th
Annual Technical Conference sponsored by Wyoming Association of Rural Water Systems. Each
March over 300 water and wastewater operators gather at the conference to participate in operator
certification training. The contest is a new addition to the WARWS conference this year. Judges for the
contest included: Senator Craig Thomas, Brian Scott of K2 radio, Sally Ann Shurmur of The Casper Star
Tribune, Buffalo Bill Cody (alias Alan Baker), Charla Colson of Region 8 Environmental Protection
Agency and Kim Parker of the Department of Environmental Quality, Water Quality Division.
Representative from Afton will be packing up samples of their water and traveling to Washington,
DC next week to compete at the national level. Small water districts and towns from all over the US will
participate in The Great American Water Taste Test held during the Rural Water Rally sponsored by
National Rural Water Association.

Afton, Wyoming; Top Five in the U.S.A.!
(Washington, D.C.) April 21, 2005 – If you’re looking for the some of the best tasting water in the
nation, move to Wyoming. In this rural community, all you have to do is turn the faucet for pure
“Quality On Tap!”
The Town of Afton, Wyoming was one of the top five finalists at the 6th Annual Great American
Water Taste Test. The taste test is held each year on Capitol Hill in conjunction with the National
Rural Water Association’s Annual Rally in Washington, D.C.
Afton’s water system was established in 1958 and has 807 rural water connections. The town’s
water supply is a periodic spring.
NRWA represents over 24,500 rural and small utilities so it is quite a big deal to make it to the final
competition where the Town of Afton competed against the top water systems from 48 state rural
water associations finishing in the top five.
The judges for the event were, Curtis Anderson, Rural Utilities Service Administrator, Michelle
Nellenbach, Staff Member of Environment and Public Works for Senator Inhofe and Gregory Bauer,
Executive Chef for the Hyatt Regency Capitol Hill. Each judge evaluated glasses of water from the
five finalists measuring them on clarity, bouquet and taste.
The five finalist were: Western Greene County Regional Water District, Walcott, Arkansas; Cass
Rural Water District, Kindred, North Dakota; Yampa, Colorado; Lower Kuskokwim School District /
Kipnuk, Bethel, Alaska; and the Town of Afton, Wyoming.
State Rural Water Associations conduct preliminary competitions selecting the best water from small
and rural systems to represent their state at the national finals.
Every April, the National Rural Water Association sponsors the Rural Water Rally and Great American
Taste Test on Capitol Hill to give utility and state officials an opportunity to visit one-on-one with their
Congressional representatives and discuss key water and wastewater issues.
